The Virginia Pilot says…
Art for a cause
Across the street from Foreman Field, three of the university’s art students painted paw prints, ODU logos, footballs and blue-and-white swirls on the faces of fans entering the game.
The students, all members of the university’s art club, did the work to raise donations to travel to New York.
Ashley Pickin, a senior, had done roughly 60 paintings Saturday afternoon – including working on three elaborate lion faces.
Malik Asante put the finishing touches on an ODU logo for alum George Shpil. Shpil’s wife, Gale, had a similar painting, with a decorative swirl, on her left cheek. “This is one of the things I wanted to do,” she said. “This is what it’s all about.”
Art lecturer Patricia Edwards said the face painting was a way for the students to use their talent to support the school community. “This is just one way we thought we could give back and get spirit going,” she said.
The artwork caught the eye of Norview resident John Legault.
“I wanted some paw prints,” he said. “I had to have something blue.” He pointed apologetically to his white shirt and madras shorts.
“I’m almost 60 years old, and this is my first college football game,” he explained.
Legault will have more games under his belt by the end of the fall – he bought season tickets to cheer ODU. “We’re starving for sports around here,” he said. “I’ve been here since noon. I was just so excited. I couldn’t get here early enough.”

Relay for Life

March 28, 2009 by nicolepiland

I got a few emails with questions about Relay for Life. I got carried away with my explanation. So, if you don’t need information and would like to join our team, go to http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=12656&pg=teamlist and click on Join Team next to NAEA ODU. If you would like more info, keep reading :

To start, this is an event put on by the American Cancer Society to raise money for cancer research. Groups get together to form a team. During Relay, there is a track set up. Each team gets an area/table around the track. The goal is to have one member of the team walking the track at all times. No one runs, I promise. However, this isn’t a contest or requirement. No one is keeping track of this. It’s more of a symbolic idea that the fight against cancer never stops until there is a cure.

This is also primarily a fundraiser event for the ACS. When you join, you donate $10 as a joining fee. (however, you get a free t-shirt :) ). You can ask your friends and family for donations before relay, and that can go towards your joining fee. Personally, it’s not my favorite idea to ask people for money, I usually just pay my $10 and wait until Relay night to try and raise money. During Relay, each team will usually have things that they are selling at their tables. I’ve participated/gone to the ODU Relay for the past three years and I’ve seen every type of food you could ever think of, drinks, coffee, little toys, lots of raffles, game time playing Guitar Hero or Wii, haircuts (!), etc. It is fun and college budget friendly, a couple of dollars for each thing. I have “hope” bracelets we could sell that I’ve had left over from previous relays and would be willing to make baked goods to sell. We could also think of some fun art activities for kids to do, since this is what we do :) . Other activities that go on during Relay that I remember are tournaments with cards or Bingo, table decorating contests, bands, a drag beauty contest, and a Luminaria ceremony dedicated to those who were diagnosed with cancer.

Relay at ODU is usually held in Webb Center, and as far as I know it will be this year. The “track” is half inside Webb, half outside. It kind of zigzags around the building. I would love to explain that better but I don’t know how. You don’t have to be an ODU student to attend. Of course, this is mainly going to be college students, and every group on campus is represented. People do attend with their families, especially in the early evening (there is even a group of girl scouts who have a team every year). You don’t have to stay the whole time.

If you would like to join our team now, visit http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=12656&pg=teamlist and click on Join Team next to NAEA ODU.

Rosemont Youth Library Mural

November 15, 2008 by nicolepiland

Here are the characters that the kids at the library voted for as their favorite book characters. Feel free to either choose a character from the list or pick a character of your own. Please comment with the character that you want to draw.
• Roscoe Riley (taken)
• Dr. Seuss character (taken)
• Clifford
• YU-GI-OH (2 votes!)
• Dora Explorer
• Boots
• Laura Ingalls Wilder
• SpongeBob (2 votes!)
• Potter (Harry?)
• Peter (rabbit?)
• Curious George
• Jack and Annie
• Judy Muddy
• Scipy Jones
• Elmo
We are starting to paint the characters next Saturday, November 22, so it would be great if we could have some sketches before then. The primary design will be children in silhouette looking at these characters coming out of the books as if they are coming to life. If someone would like to work on this part, that would be great. Please have any sketches completed by Thursday, November 20. These don’t have to be perfect, we can always change things as we start painting.
Thanks to everyone for any and all help.
